  • Maintanance of Inbred lines

Maintanance of genetic purity of hybrid corn seed is a complicated procedure.

PROCEDURE

  • We maintain inbred lines by self-pollination, Sib pollination and sometime by the combination of both procedure.
  • After comletion of these procedure we keep some of the seed as a breeder seed, which is very important for the survival of corn hybrid sustainable results.
  • Corn is cross pollinated that is why, when we need bulk quantity of seed , we get some seed from breeder seed for commerical production of the inbred lines, to protect the hybrids from contamination.
  • We grow inbred lines in isolation where no external pollen present in atmosphere.
  • During the bulk production we eliminate all the off types plant before pollination.
  • At harvesting time we remove all the off- type cobs for maintaining the purity.
  • During all the above process our breeders use morphological descriptors for gentic purity of inbred lines.
